The Opportunity

Our friends at Thermo Fisher are some of the most innovative Talent Acquisition professionals we know. Before it became the new normal, their team recognized that by 2020 (this year!), 80% of internet traffic would consist of video. They knew they needed to integrate video into their employer brand strategy to lead that change

Thermo Fisher has locations all over the globe, working on everything from Life Sciences to Analytical Instruments to Laboratory Products. Their mission: To enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer, comes to life within the context of the location and jobs at each facility.

What we Created

Thermo Fisher chose a mix of Full Production and Production Lite video engagements. For some projects, our team came on site with cameras to film, for other projects the teams used our Video Kit to capture stories. This fulfilled their need for local content, and fit within a scalable budget to roll out across dozens of locations from Tijuana, to Brno to Singapore. These videos were featured on recruiting micro-sites, in advertising and to infuse local hiring teams with content about their specific location.

Impact

The video below (also a Skill Scout production!) shares the impact of Thermo Fisher’s achievements activating their employer brand globally. They rose to the #2 most viewed company in their industry on Glassdoor, reached over 100M job seekers with their videos and social content, and have 3 times the level of engagement on their career sites as their peers.

She was recently named “HR Superhero of the Year” by DisruptHR Chicago. She is also the co-founder of Mezcla Media Collective. A non-profit that elevates women filmmakers of color. Lead Producer

CAROLINE OLSEN

Caroline is one of Skill Scout’s lead producers, using her natural curiosity and organizational skills to discover stories and bring them to life through video. Lead Producer

NICK HILL

Always captivated by the sights, sounds and musical scores of film, Nick has been moved from an early age on the power video and film can have in telling a story. The relationship between music and film is what pushed Nick to explore a life behind the camera and as a video editor. As a musician, he figured the two walked hand in hand. As he developed his skills in videography and editing through his YouTube channel and working with local musicians, bands and businesses, he felt he could lend his hand to telling deeper, more human-driven stories. Nick states, “I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much, meet so many amazing humans and to assist in telling their stories through the work they do. It’s been nothing short of a privilege to do so as part of the Skill Scout team.”

Our Story

Our story began on the shores of the Baltimore Harbor in 2011. There, lies a small, humming woodshop filled with young people. They are learning valuable lessons beyond bandsaws, lathes, and drill presses. These young adults were after a fresh start to their lives, and exposure to a world outside of their neighborhoods. One that supported them in seeking and securing viable career paths.

But the problem was, job descriptions don’t show what a job is like. And, you cannot be what you cannot see. The opportunity became clear. It’s hard to know what a job is all about if you’ve never done it before and your window inside of it is a list of bullet points on a job description. The dynamic, human spirit of work is missing there. We saw an opportunity to use the power of video storytelling to expose young people to the world of work. And, provide them the chance to decide whether that kind of work was a good fit. With that in mind, we started filming jobs - featuring a “day in the life” of the person doing the work. We saw it as our mission to help make more meaningful workplace connections through the power of film.

Six years later, we have built a media company that some of the world’s biggest brands entrust with sharing their stories on video. What remains, is our commitment to capturing and sharing authentic stories of the workplace. Stories that attract and engage candidates and employees alike. Stories that show the humanity of work. Whether you’re a small manufacturing shop in the suburbs of Illinois or household brand like Nike, American Airlines, or McDonalds. You have a unique story to tell about your company and the people behind it. And, it would be our privilege to help you tell it.

Creed

We exist to capture the humanity of all work. Everyone has a story of work and why it’s meaningful. And, it’s our job as workplace documentarians to capture those stories with humility, reverence, and curiosity.
